The behavior in an organization is not always the same as it usually is in the society. The opportunity to meet the top management is cashed in or lost depends entirely on the individual. The following is a case study of how Johnny (representing those who are new in the corporate culture) missed out what he could have achieved.
Not many days had passed when Johnny’s ultimate boss was in Delhi. Except those in the corporate office the other office subordinates usually do not get a chance to see him. The last time Johnny met him was 18 months back whenhe arrived Delhi and the meeting lasted for 30 minutes and that too under Johnny’s reporting manager’s presence.
This time, just 3 days before his arrival, the boss called up on phone and said, “I am coming on Tuesday, have you any engagements on that day or are you free”? Johnny had to go out on an official tour, so he requested, “Sir, I am afraid I would not be able to meet you since I have already fixed up with the client for Tuesday and I would leave the city on Monday itself”.
But bosses are bosses. He insisted Johnny to talk to the client and alter the program. Finally, the stage was set. The client agreed and the program was postponed
On the closing note the boss said, “I would be reaching the Delhi airport on Monday evening, make sure you are there to escort me to the hotel”. Here, the mistakes commonly made by new people are either they take the arrival of the boss so high that they forget everything else or they take it so lightly and negatively that they miss what is essentially required.
By this time Johnny has started thinking that boss would take him for his own purpose. To assign him all the report preparation work and other miscellaneous work in that trip.
Take it positively. The boss has reached this position for some reason. Look for the reason why he made it to the top and try to learn things from his behavior. Don’t just try to learn but also try to make the boss aware of your caliber.
