Job of a security guard is one of the toughest and probably one of the most underpaid jobs in India. A security guard has to work in a shift of twelve hours in some companies and where the shift timings are 8 hours, a security guard works overtime to earn some extra money. Whenever I go entering my office the first thing that comes into my mind is – shouldn’t the income of security guard be more than what he earns?
Working for twelve or ten hours a day and that too standing at one place checking the people continuously irrespectiveof sun, rain and other weather effects, is not as easy as it seems to be. For those who don’t have to constantly check the people, sitting at one place without moving could be more irritating than those who work constantly.
A security guard told me that though they carry arms, they are not allowed to use it unless really required. Nevertheless not all the security guards got arms. Some haveto fight (if required) with almost nothing to defend.
Another irritation for the security guards is the behavior or attitude of people towards them. As told by some security guards, not all the people are open to frisking or letting their bags checked. Security guards have often to face bad behavior from some powerful people.
There is no appreciation until everything goes fine but once something goes wrong the security guard is called first. I saw it once when the security guard was accused of not responding in a fire. Later, he told that he was never trained to operate an extinguisher but was always expected to operate when required.
Despite lots and lots of vacancies in the security factor it is not the security guards who earn. It is not the security guards who make profit. What the security guards get is just a job which could keep their family running.
