Long office hours, increased table work and mental exercises leave the professionals exhausted by the end of the day. This exhaust brings with it certain side-effects, insomnia or sleeplessness being one of them.
For more than 8 hours continuously working over a particular subject it happens that the same discussions rotate in the minds as thoughts. By the time they reach home it is time to fall asleep which in itself seems like a big task.
The older people used to suggest few exercises to their grandchildren/children that proved useful when given a try. Some of the popular ones were:
Close your eyes and imagine the sheep are crossing the fence. Keep counting them. It could never be realized as to when you would fall asleep.
Those who slept on terrace were told to count the stars.
Religious people suggested chanting God’s name continuously and counting the number of chants.
All of these were nothing but the techniques to practise concentration. Insomnia results out of diverted minds. Indian Astrologers say that those who are born with Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn in the ascendant or if they have any of those moon signs are restless. Lack of exercise is one of the major reasons of the constantly increasing cases of insomnia. Even the children have been found to have suffered this. Attractive virtual world i.e. Facebook, videogames, movies, etc. is preferred over prevalent outdoor games.
In the early days there were lot of options to exercise but with the development in technology the luxuries and comforts don’t leave much margin to exercise and leave the body so tired that you fall asleep as soon as you go to bed.
These days the better options are through concentration only. Try practicing either the above mentioned conventional tricks or try the following:
Sit straight, close the lights (optional) and meditate. Either meditate in silence or vibrate yourself chanting OM. The pronunciation may be as if you are humming. This will add spiritual goodness as well as a good sleep and complete rest.
Concentrating with Indian Classical music is also a considerable option. There is no restriction on the posture. Concentration can be practised anywhere, anytime with no investment but a certain cure to restlessness.
