There are two reasons for anyone to take the studies ahead. Either that person wants to explore the area of interest or there is an urge for money and fame. What happens practically is that majority of students that are actually interested in music, dancing, painting, poetry, philosophical studies and other such careers that don’t produce much money, have to choose engineering or medical science just because it is easy for them to get success there.
Even their parents suggest them to choose such career opportunities that get them easy job and constant growth. There was a boy that faced similarproblem. He got seriously interested in Indian Classical Music when he was in 12th. The irony was that he didn’t know what he wanted to do in life. He chose physics, chemistry and maths just because his parents wanted him to do so and now when they wanted him to hit the goal i.e. the entrance exams for engineering he used to spend an hour daily for music practice.
There are two aspects here. The parents are not wrong as they know how tough the life is but where they go wrong is when they don’t try to find out where the interest of the child really is. Most of them do this by asking the child to tell his area of interest. Majority of them would not tell as even they don’t know
While parents understand that classical music is not a thing that will earn money or poetry is not that would help them get good careers to collect material for themselves. Hence the student is fed with the thought that a career in the most followed field such as mechanical engineering, chemical engineering or software technology would be best career option for the student.
The student joins and somehow gets away with a degree but when he joins the job at some organization and is not able to meet the expectations, he/she starts accusing the organization, politics in the organization and the behaviour of the boss. The problem that has deep roots with in oneself is never realized and the others are accused.
How to choose careers is all about proper planning which includes finding out the area of interest, skills and talent of the individual, career options in that particular field etc. Nowadays it is not that poetry won’t produce money or writing won’t make the author rich. Recent example is the author of Harry Potter. The right approach is the right solution to choosing careers.
