They complain to other people who would take deep interest in their sorrow but have no power to change their conditions.

Hard working professionals seldom display their efforts. They feel as if everybody knows how hard they had worked throughout the year and they would get what they deserved but what happens actually is not as they would have expected. Things turn the wrong way. Smart people make a note of everything they had done while the hard workers take it for granted. They are not able to tell what they had done in a justified manner.
